Henna tattoos , also known as Mehndi, is another interesting way temporary tattooing. Coming from a south Asia, henna uses marks made by the stains of silver nitrate on the skin when exposed to ultraviolet light of Sun or any other source. Traditionally henna was drawn in different geometrical patterns on the hands, feet, and face, but modern henna is applied in any given shape or design anywhere on the body . Henna does not allow for a full range of colours but only shades of reds, oranges, browns, and blacks. This process of applying the tattoo and allowing it to absorb ultra-violet light of Sun, means that henna tattoos once done take minutes or even hours, not seconds to be ready, like other temporary tattoos (water transfer or sticker tattoos). However, coz of this extended finishing time, comes a long lasting & excellent result. Usually henna tattoos can take up to 10-15 days to fade from the skin. Sunscreen will act as a shield from the sun, making henna tattoo last longer. Using henna for many women in poor countries was a cheaper way of adorning herself and becoming exotic, to set herself apart from other people. The art of Henna tattooing has been practiced for thousands of years in the countries mentioned above but in the last 5-7 years there has been a flow of interest from Western countries too. It is now widely accepted as an art in self expression and uniqueness.
